NAMI-NYC Launches Mental Health Programs for Teens 14-18

New York, New York January 13, 2025 — The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City (NAMI-NYC) has launched mental health programs for New York City Youth ages 14-18. Leveraging over 40 years of experience supporting adult mental health, NAMI-NYC’s youth programs are designed to support teens through mental health challenges, diagnosed or not.

According to the World Health Organization, one in seven 10–19-year-olds experience a mental health disorder and suicide has become the second leading cause of death. “We need to start meeting youth where they are when it comes to mental health support. It is vital in this mental health crisis that we provide free, comprehensive peer led support services for teens so they can get help when they need it without fear or barriers,” shared NAMI-NYC COO Lynnette Verges.

Teens ages 14–18 can now reach out to the NAMI-NYC Helpline to talk with peers close to their age who truly understand. The new virtual teen support group starting Thursday, January 30, 4-5 PM, meets weekly and is facilitated by peers close in age who understand the challenges youth face because they themselves have been through similar experiences

“There is a huge value in having peer-led, peer-run mental health programs for youth. Teens won’t be receptive to adults talking at them. Our programs create a space for youth to connect as well as equip them with the skills to help each other through mental health recovery,” said Marilyn Jacob, PhD, LCSW NAMI-NYC Youth Peer Support Director.

This program is possible in part due to generous funding from NYC Council.
