A global pandemic caused by COVID-19 aside – in 2020, my family witnessed my dear cousin Mirta’s passing at the age of 31, following a tough, lengthy battle with a mental illness. With the hope that sharing Mirta’s story would encourage those in need to seek help, and those surrounding them to listen and extend their support, I will be running the New York City Marathon on November 6, raising awareness about this critically important issue and supporting the vital work of NAMI-NYC.
