New York, NY, March 8, 2024–In light of the recently announced Five-Point Plan to Protect New Yorkers on the Subway, NAMI-NYC maintains that peer-led crisis response and outreach, as well as community-based mental health support services, are the best way to effectively help New Yorkers living with serious mental illness (SMI), not police, and now, military presence.
Compassionate, empathetic, trained peers and outreach teams are what individuals living with SMI need and deserve to find mental illness recovery. Increasing their interactions with badges and guns will not address this issue, but rather, could have long-lasting negative implications for the mental health and well-being of affected individuals and the community-at-large.
