19-year-old Win Rozario called for help for himself while he was having a mental health emergency and the police murdered him in his home, in front of his family. The body cam footage shows us yet again that police are not now and will never be the appropriate response to mental health crises. The police barged in asking if the caller was “bipolar schizo,” were screaming, cursing, and further escalating the situation, and then needlessly and tragically executed Win point blank, even as his family begged them not to shoot. There is no place for police in crisis response. How many lives do we need to lose to realize this isn’t working? No one – not even 1% of mental health calls – should die during a mental health emergency.
