At NAMI-NYC, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and empowering environment for all individuals who engage with our services. Whether you are attending a support group, calling our Helpline, participating in a class, or joining one of our community presentations you are entitled to the following rights as a participant:
1. Right to Respect and Dignity
You have the right to be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect regardless of your race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, ability, immigration status, socioeconomic status, mental health challenge or disability.
2. Right to Confidentiality
You have the right to confidentiality. We recognize and respect that each individual has different needs and boundaries when it comes to sharing information, NAMI-NYC will protect your personal information and only share it with your written consent or as required by funders and/or the law (e.g., in cases of mandated reporting of abuse or imminent risk). You have the right to revoke consent given to share information at any time and can do so by communicating directly with program staff.
3. Right to Safety from Harm
You have the right to participate in NAMI-NYC services in an environment that is free from abuse, discrimination, harassment, and any form of physical harm. If at any point you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, you are encouraged to speak with program staff or volunteer immediately about your concerns which will be taken seriously and addressed in accordance with NAMI-NYC policies and procedures.
4. Right to Emotional Safety
You have the right to participate in our programs without fear of judgment, bullying, intimidation and verbal or emotional maltreatment. We are committed to maintaining spaces that promote psychological safety and mutual respect. Disruptive or harmful behavior will not be tolerated and will be addressed in alignment with our agency protocols e.g. Visitors Code of Conduct, etc.
5. Right to Voluntary Participation
All NAMI-NYC programs are voluntary. You have the right to choose the programs you wish to participate in and can stop participating at any time without penalty or impact on your access to other services. If you take a hiatus, you can always return to any discontinued services.
6. Right to Accessible, Free Services
NAMI-NYC is committed to offering services that are free and accessible to both individuals living with mental health challenges as well as family members and friends supporting a loved one with mental illness. You will not be personally charged a fee to access our support groups, Helpline, education classes, or community events.
7. Right to Clear and Accurate Information
You have the right to receive clear and accurate information about our programs, your rights as a participant, and the support available to you at NAMI-NYC. We encourage you to ask questions and seek clarification at any time via our Helpline.
8. Right to Provide Feedback/Raise Concerns
You have the right to offer feedback or file a complaint without fear of retribution. Your input is important and helps us improve. Feedback can be provided via our survey form available for all programs or by emailing the department staff as listed on our website: www.naminyc.org.

9. Right to Cultural Sensitivity
You have the right to access services that are delivered in a culturally sensitive, inclusive, and affirming manner. NAMI-NYC is committed to honoring the diverse identities, values, experiences, and perspectives of all individuals we serve. Your cultural identity will be acknowledged and respected in all NAMI-NYC spaces.
10. Right to Be Heard
You have the right to express your needs, share your experiences, and participate in a way that honors your voice. We are here to listen and support you on your journey.
11. Right to Seek Support
You have the right to receive support and guidance from program staff and/or volunteers to help you understand your rights.
