Our Presenters:
Nina is a Brooklyn-born mental health advocate, public speaker, writer, and coordinator of NAMI-NYC’s In Our Own Voice program. Before becoming a staff member at NAMI-NYC, she was a long-standing volunteer for over 7 years, speaking at schools, hospitals, and various community spaces and has been recognized as NAMI-NYC’s Volunteer of the Year award. She is passionate about sharing her story to combat the stigma surrounding mental health. Nina aims to inspire and motivate others on their paths to self-acceptance and resilience.
Miguel, almost two decades ago, experienced six hospitalizations in eight years and, at times, did not have a place to call home. With NAMI-NYC as a foundation of his recovery, Miguel learned to manage bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. Today, Miguel is an active NAMI-NYC volunteer, teaching our Peer-to-Peer LGBTQ+ class and serving as an Advocacy Ambassador. Miguel also went back to school to become a social worker. Miguel has been instrumental in developing one-of-a-kind NAMI-NYC support groups, such as Hearing Voices and Living with Thoughts of Suicide. Miguel has been recognized with NAMI-NYC’s Volunteer of the Year award and is a frequent mental health champion at public events and in the media.
