Awareness is one of the strongest predictors of whether employees actually use their mental health benefits and whether they stay with their employer. Yet research shows significant gaps:
- Many employees aren’t fully aware of the mental health benefits available to them. About 26% of employees aren’t sure whether their employer offers mental health benefits, and only about 53% know how to access the benefits they do have (NAMI).
- Awareness directly impacts retention and engagement. Employees who understand their benefits are 10 percentage points more likely to stay, and younger workers are especially likely to choose or remain in roles that offer and clearly communicate mental health support (SHRM).
- Even when resources exist, employees often feel they aren’t enough. A majority (59% of U.S. workers) say their organization provides too few mental health resources (SHRM). 84% of employees report that increased trainings about employer health insurance benefits for mental health treatment would benefit their mental health (NAMI).
When employees aren’t aware of their benefits, they are far less likely to seek help early, which is when support can be most effective.
