The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City (“NAMI-NYC Metro”) respects your privacy. This privacy and security policy (“Privacy Policy”) explains how we process and protect personally identifiable information or personal data (“Personal Information”).

Your Privacy and Our Commitment to Our Donors

We will not sell, share or trade our users’ or donors’ names or Personal Information with any other entity (aside from vendors necessary to provide our services, such as payment processors), nor send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations. This policy applies to all information received by NAMI-NYC Metro, both online and offline, on any Platform (“Platform”, includes the NAMI-NYC Metro website and mobile applications), as well as any electronic, written, or oral communications. To the extent any donations are processed through a third-party service provider, our donors’ information will only be used for purposes necessary to process the donation.

Collecting and Processing Personal Information

The Personal Information that we may collect depends on the nature of the relationship we have with you. If you interact with us through our website, we may collect contact and demographic information through online forms or via your direct communications with us. Our website may also collect Personal Information automatically, such as your IP address, including through cookies or other online trackers as described below. If you are a donor, we may also collect financial information to process your donation through online forms or via direct communication with you.

If you are a volunteer or an advocate, we may collect identification and contact information, including full name, phone number (which we may use to contact you, including by Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging), email, address and emergency contact name and phone number. Additional demographic and personal information is collected when volunteers participate in NAMI-NYC services in alignment with our standard operating procedures for the program as outlined in the following paragraph.

If you seek our help, such as through our classes, support groups, referrals, by calling our helpline, or by using our online chat or text feature, we may collect: identification and contact information, including full name, phone number (which we may use to contact you, including by Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging), email, postal zip code, full address, and emergency contacts name, phone number (which we may use to contact them, including by Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging, if they have opted-in to that service), and relationship; demographic information including gender identity, date of birth, date of birth for your ill relative (when applicable), race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and primary language; and personal information including your relationship to mental illness and other pertinent information. For class registrants, in addition to the above, we collect personal information including diagnosis of self or ill relative (when applicable); information related to the onset of mental illness, treatment and hospitalization history; and other Personal Information you choose to provide as part of receiving our services, or share in our classes or through our helpline, including Personal Information that may lead to an inference of your health status, family life or diagnosis.

You may always call our helpline at 212-684-3264 if you need anonymous assistance. Individuals 18 years of age or older may attend our adult support groups anonymously if they choose. Unfortunately, we cannot allow individuals 14-18 years old to attend our support groups anonymously.

If you use our online chat or text feature, we and our third-party chat and text service provider, RingCentral, may keep a transcript of your chat or text with us. By using our online chat or text feature, you agree to allow RingCentral to record a transcript of your conversation.

SMS Terms & Conditions 

By opting into our SMS communications, you agree to receive messages related to the services and activities of NAMI-NYC as it relates to your Helpline inquiry, subject to our Terms of Use. These messages may include, but are not limited to: emotional support, psychoeducation, links to program meetings, links to support resources, phone numbers to receive additional support at.  We will not share your opt-in to an SMS campaign with any third party for purposes unrelated to our services and activities. SMS consent is not shared with third parties for marketing purposes. We may share your Personal Data, including your SMS opt-in or consent status, with third parties that help us provide our messaging services, including but not limited to platform providers, phone companies, and any other vendors who assist us in the delivery of text messages.

Messaging frequency may vary depending on the nature of the communication with our Helpline. Message and data rates may apply based on your mobile carrier’s plan. Cookies, IP Address and Other Information Collected Automatically

Like most websites, ours collects necessary technical information to allow you to access and interact with our website. We do this through the use of cookies and other online trackers. NAMI-NYC Metro does not share this information with third parties, nor use it for any purpose beyond operating our website and analyzing its use to improve user experience. We cannot guarantee or warrant the security of any information disclosed or transmitted to us and cannot be responsible for the theft, destruction or inadvertent disclosure of Personal Information.

Our Privacy Policy does not cover links to websites operated by third parties, and we are not responsible for the content on those websites or their privacy or security practices. Please review the privacy policy of each third party website before you provide any Personal Information to those sites. 

Children’s Privacy

NAMI-NYC Metro does not knowingly collect Personal Information from anyone under 13 years of age. If you are under 13, please do not submit any Personal Information on our website.

Deleting Your Personal Information

NAMI-NYC Metro retains Personal Information for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the business purpose(s) for which it was collected, conduct audits, enforce our legal rights, prevent fraud and ensure security, or comply with our legal obligations. If you haven’t had services with us in seven (7) years or more and would like us to delete your Personal Information, please make that request through the contact information provided below.

Our Privacy & Security Policy is intended to provide you with the safest and most secure experience possible. Since technologies change, we reserve the right to change, modify, add or remove portions of our Policy at any time without prior notice. Please periodically review our Policy for changes.
