The NAMI Young Adult Support Group is a peer support group. Broadly speaking, that means the group is facilitated by people with a personal experience of mental health issues, as opposed to professional health care providers. (That’s the NAMI way—we use the power, and expertise, of lived experience.) It’s a space where participants can honestly discuss their mental health concerns, in an environment where their peers truly understand what they’re going through.
The group is for young adults ages 18-30. The group is not limited to a specific diagnosis, or any diagnosis at all! Whether you’re living with a mental illness, or just experiencing a challenging season in your life, we’re here to talk about mental health.
The group is built on the values of confidentiality and mutual respect. Within that framework, it has a very open structure. Each meeting starts with a brief check-in, and then the time is spent discussing the topics that each group member has requested. In other words, we talk about what you want to talk about! You choose how much or how little you want to share, and you’re always welcome to just listen.
Living with a mental health condition can be a confusing and isolating process, but you’re not alone. Speaking with peers can help you gain new insight, learn how to advocate for yourself, and gain support to make changes in your life. The group is a place to empower you to better care for your mental health and to work towards your goals. If you want to talk, we’re here to listen.
“This is a place where we can be ourselves, and tell our own stories. Especially these days, it seems we rarely take the time to reflect on what matters. I’ve found strength through listening. I thought I was a good listener, but I realized I wasn’t. I’m much better at it now, because of this group.”
Danielle, YASG co-facilitator
