New York, NY, January 29, 2024 – NAMI-NYC (National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City)’s Workplace Mental Health Initiative has released a new, innovative report titled, “Lessons from the Field: Implementing Mental Health Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) & Recommendations for Future Success.” This report was made possible by the generous support of the Bruce C. Abrams Foundation.
NAMI-NYC partnered with fourteen companies to conduct a survey about their ERGs’ impactful work. The report provides an in-depth analysis of the establishment and impact of mental health ERGs in the workplace and highlights best practices. The report also offers strategic recommendations for companies looking to start or enhance their mental health ERGs.
The report emphasizes the significant role of ERGs in promoting mental wellness in the workplace. It details how these groups have become vital in creating supportive communities, reducing stigma associated with mental health challenges, and providing a platform for employee-led initiatives and feedback on organizational policies.
Some of the key recommendations for companies include the importance of executive sponsorship, clear governance structures, and utilizing an intersectional approach in the successful operation of ERGs. A key finding of the report is the positive impact of ERGs on elevating the role of lived experience in the workplace to normalize and destigmatize mental health challenges. The report shows how ERGs contribute to a more inclusive, empathetic, and mentally healthy workplace. “Employees want to bring their most authentic selves to work and dedicated mental health ERGs create space for conversation. Educational programs and storytelling normalize mental health challenges at work and foster a psychologically safe environment,” said Matt Kudish, NAMI-NYC CEO.
NAMI-NYC, through this report, aims to inspire and guide organizations in their journey towards a more mentally healthy workplace. The report is a valuable resource for employees, as well as Human Resources, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Wellness, and business leaders interested in creating or expanding their ERG program. It serves as a roadmap for developing effective mental health strategies and underscores the importance of collective efforts in fostering a supportive work environment.
NAMI-NYC emphasizes the importance of creating a mental health-friendly workplace, leading to improvements in individual well-being and overall organizational performance.
